Wheelchair-Accessible Transport in Punta Cana: What Your Options Are
Punta Cana has very little wheelchair-accessible transport, and almost none of it is guaranteed in advance. Standard resort shuttles are coaches with steps, and most airport transfer vehicles are minivans and SUVs without ramps or lifts. What normally works is a vehicle with enough luggage space for a folding wheelchair, plus a driver who helps with the transfer in and out of the seat. Here is how to plan around that, and what to ask before you pay for anything.

What actually exists in Punta Cana
| Option | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Resort or tour-operator shuttle | A coach or minibus with steps and overhead luggage. No ramp, no lift. Fine if you can manage a few steps with help; not usable seated in a chair. |
| Private transfer (minivan or SUV) | The realistic option. A folding manual wheelchair goes in the boot; the passenger transfers into a normal seat. Ask for an assisted transfer when booking. |
| Taxi at the airport | Vehicle type is whatever turns up. Not something to rely on if you need space for equipment or help transferring. |
| Ramp or lift-equipped van | Rare in this region and never something to assume. If a company offers one, ask for written confirmation of the specific vehicle for your date. |
Arriving at Punta Cana Airport (PUJ)
Airline wheelchair assistance normally takes you from the aircraft through immigration to arrivals. The gap is what happens next: the assistance chair belongs to the airport and stops there, so from the pick-up area onwards you are on your own equipment, or on someone’s arm.
That is the moment most of our customers are planning for. We can have your wheelchair or mobility scooter waiting at PUJ, so you go from airline assistance straight into your own equipment rather than managing the transfer, the queue and the drive without anything. Delivery to the airport is available.
What to ask before you book a transfer
- Which exact vehicle? Ask for the model, not the category. “Accessible van” means different things to different operators.
- Is there a ramp or a lift, or is it an assisted transfer into a seat? If it is an assisted transfer, confirm the driver will help.
- Will a folding wheelchair fit with our luggage? A folded chair takes roughly the space of a large suitcase.
- Can the equipment travel if it does not fold? A mobility scooter or a power chair usually cannot go in a standard transfer vehicle. This is the most common surprise.
- What happens at the resort entrance? Most lobbies are step-free, but the drop-off point may not be next to the reception desk.
The cheapest fix: do not travel with the problem
Transport is the hardest part of an accessible trip to Punta Cana to arrange in advance, and it is also the shortest part of the holiday: one drive in, one drive out. The distance you actually repeat is the one inside the resort, several times a day, where the beach is always far from the lobby.
So the practical plan most of our customers land on is: travel with a folding manual wheelchair or use airline and driver assistance for the transfer, and have a scooter or electric wheelchair waiting at the resort for the week. Which one suits you depends on whether you are travelling with someone who can push.
Frequently asked questions
Do you provide wheelchair-accessible transfers?
Not yet. Today we rent and deliver mobility equipment — wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walkers and rollators — including delivery to Punta Cana airport. An accessible transfer service is something we are working on; message us with your dates and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot cover.
Can my mobility scooter travel in a transfer vehicle?
Usually not. Scooters do not fold and are heavy. That is one reason we deliver to the resort or to the airport instead: the equipment is already where you need it.
Are Punta Cana resorts accessible once you arrive?
Partly. Ramps exist in the main areas, steps are common beside them, and lifts serve the upper floors. What resorts do not do is lend you a wheelchair for your whole stay; when they lend one at all, it is for a special occasion and for a couple of hours. Full detail here.
Reserve equipment for your trip, or send us your flight details and hotel on WhatsApp and we will tell you what makes sense for your arrival.
